Visual effects workers at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) — the primary VFX house behind the Star Wars franchise — have voted to unionize with IATSE, marking a significant labor milestone for the VFX sector, which has historically been one of the last holdouts in an otherwise heavily unionized Hollywood production ecosystem.
The move brings ILM artists and technicians under IATSE’s umbrella, giving them access to collectively bargained wages, benefits, and working condition protections. VFX workers have long pushed for union representation, citing erratic hours, project-to-project instability, and lack of residuals compared to their union counterparts in other below-the-line crafts.
For producers and production companies, this signals a broader shift: VFX labor costs and contracting structures at major facilities may change as collective bargaining agreements are negotiated. Budgeting assumptions for VFX-heavy productions — particularly those working with ILM — should be revisited as contract terms take shape.
This follows years of organizing efforts across the VFX industry and adds momentum to unionization pushes at other facilities. Crew and vendors in adjacent disciplines should watch for ripple effects on rates and workflows at other large VFX houses.
