Hungary has reinstated an uncapped film tax rebate, according to Ákos Erdős of Budapest-based production services company Paprika Studios. The move reverses previous limitations that had made the incentive less competitive for large-budget international shoots.
The rebate — structured as a tax incentive rather than a direct grant — is now available without a ceiling on qualifying spend, which puts Hungary back in contention for big-budget features and series that were previously priced out of the program. Erdős describes the change as a return to stability after a period of uncertainty that had caused some productions to look elsewhere in Eastern Europe.
For US producers and line producers scouting European locations, Hungary offers established infrastructure including Korda Studios, a skilled below-the-line crew base, and a relatively low cost-of-living compared to Western European markets. The uncapped structure means larger productions — the kind that spend tens of millions on local labor and facilities — can now calculate meaningful returns on Hungarian spend without hitting a rebate ceiling.
Productions that previously worked in Hungary and shifted to neighboring countries like the Czech Republic, Romania, or Serbia during the period of capped incentives may want to revisit their location calculus. The competitive Eastern European incentive landscape remains tight, but an uncapped rebate is a significant differentiator.
US producers should consult Hungarian co-production partners or a qualified international tax attorney to verify current qualifying expenditure rules, minimum spend thresholds, and timeline for rebate processing before committing to a shoot.
