A newly released study commissioned by the entertainment industry projects that a federal film and TV production tax credit could generate approximately 143,000 additional jobs across the United States.
The findings arrive as the industry continues to lobby Congress for a national-level incentive to complement the patchwork of state-by-state programs that currently drive production location decisions. Unlike state incentives โ which vary widely in caps, qualifying expenses, and transferability โ a federal credit would apply uniformly across all 50 states, potentially reducing the pressure on productions to chase incentives into specific markets.
For working crew, the implications are significant. A federal credit could stabilize employment that has been volatile since the 2023 strikes and the broader streaming pullback, and it could bring more production to states that currently lack competitive incentive programs, broadening the geographic spread of available work.
Producers and line producers should note that the study is industry-commissioned, which warrants some skepticism about methodology and projections โ but the job numbers, if even partially accurate, make a compelling case for legislation. No specific bill has been attached to this announcement, and federal tax credit proposals have stalled in Congress before.
Watch for developments in Washington and updates on whether any pending legislation gains traction in the current session. Film-Friendly will track this if a concrete bill moves forward.
